if i disable lightdm auto-login then the power-cog gui works correctly.
unfortunately that's not an option for me ...

"sudo shutdown -h now" from the command line works for me. it's only the
gui interface (ie power-cog) that's not working. is this the same
behavior that you're seeing @nick rundy ?
