Thanks for your bugreport.
This should be much better with the gutsy 0.2.5 version that will setup the
environment correctly so that the gnome debconf frontend is used.
There is still a timeout for the terminal expansion required, I will look into
that.

I think I just experienced the same bug in feisty.
I tried installing
http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.3.8/VirtualBox_1.3.8_Ubuntu_feisty_i386.deb
and it seemed to be taking a very long time to install. The gdebi
window was still animated - the orange progress indicator moving back
and forth
