I have the same problem with Xubuntu 18.04. Bug #1811402
The system boots using EFI v1.10 by Apple, but Grub is used, too. I wonder, how
to switch to BIOS boot?

Same behavior on raring with nvidia drivers 304.84, but it's not only a
blank screen: the video output if switched off. Please note that the tty
is working underneath, if I login and type reboot, it works... so it
seems to be a video issue.
If I remove quite splash from grub as someone suggests, I

Got this issue after installing 12.04 to MacBook 5.1.
Switching to BIOS boot instead of (now default) EFI brings back my precious
tty's and backlight control.
