I have the same problem with VLC in Feisty Fawn.
It seems to be the same as reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/103025
The workaround is to change VLC to use OSS instead of ALSA.
But it should definitely be fixed, so that ALSA support works fine with VLC.

I found out that setting the "Volume Normalization" and sliding the
"Maximum Level" to the left helps a bit
