Or ... not. When I did run the nVidia X Server Settings it said that I
did not have nVidia card and then the system froze again.

Despite the errors when I upgraded to 3.3 rc7 Ubuntu now seems to be booting
fine with the new 3.3 rc7 kernel.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.3 kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing'

I have tried another 3.2 build from kernel.org with the same error. This
was prior to trying to upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10. My guess is this
could be related to the nVidia card (NVS 3100M) on this Dell Latitude
