This is a known bug: Shotwell does not correctly handle dates before
1969. If you try to give photos dates earlier than that, you may get
unpredictable results including incorrect sorting. See

Thanks for reporting this. A few questions to help debug this:
- How are you changing the date of the photo?
- When you mention that if you change the date of the photo to 1944 and all the
photos are mixed, can you clarify where they are mixed? Do you mean that the
library view no longer proper
