Kubuntu and would like to try GNOME, you just install ubuntu-desktop. For KDE
on Ubuntu, it is kubuntu desktop. And upgrades are easier, since ifa new
package enters default installation, it is installed this way painle
I am coming across the same problem in many cases. Tried to uninstall
gaim, but nautilus-sendto depends on gaim, and ubuntu-desktop depends on
nautilus-sendto. Surely these should be recommends rather than
dependencies.

How do you safely remove packages without it removing things such as
Ubuntu-desktop then? I have been trying to clean up my filesystem as
much as possible due to the fact that I'm forced to work with a very
small partition and I keep finding it refusing to let me remove packages
like Firefox simpl
Yeah, you're right. synaptic makes it sound like the package is
required.

I believe the whole purpose of the metapackage is to bind together the
default installation of Ubuntu.
If you don't want everything that is installed by default, you can
remove the package. It doesn't break anything. It's a good idea to have
the package installed when doing a distribution upgrade,
