I still have the problem with Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, I've a friend (with
a Sony VAIO, I haven't more details about his hardware) who had the same
problem with 7.10 but not with 8.04.

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. If
possible, please check whether the issue still exist in the Hardy Heron
8.04 LTS release.

I've this problem on Gutsy.
I've an Amilo Pi 2515 laptop and when I connect my headphones, the
speakers don't mute... I've installed Windows Vista and when I start
windows, the headphone's jack have a red light inside, this light is off
when I start Ubuntu.
$ uname -a
Linux Atlantis 2.6.22-14-gen
The next stable version of the alsa-driver (1.0.14) should be released next
monday (june 3rd).

So if you don't want to go through the hassle of patching the driver as
described in the ubuntu forums thread I recommend waiting for Monday and
compiling
