My machine has similar problem (Asus UX31, using: i915.powersave=1
i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.semaphores=1).
* Under Oneiric, the issue seemed to be gone until the latest kernel
update. Since the last update, the machine would die suddenly if the
battery has power left for about an hour.

The last two kernel releases in Precise have somehow re-introduced this
issue for me. After many weeks of excellent stability with zero sudden
shutdowns, the problem is now back with a vengeance. It happens
particularly frequently when unplugging the AC power while the machine
is powered on.

Thanks for the feedback Chris. And Dean, I'm sorry to hear about your
hardware.
Given Chris' feedback, the current RC6 patches we are carrying sound
most promising. For now I'm going to mark this bug Fix Released. We
intend to carry these patches for the 12.04 release assuming we do not

I've been testing this latest kernel on my UX31 for the past 3 days with
no sudden shutdowns experienced. Will keep this bug updated if I do
experience any, but my machine is the most stable it has ever been.
Power consumption is very reasonable at around 8 watts with moderate
screen brightness.

Seems like I'm not going to be any use to anyone for testing. My UX31
seems to be bricked. While in the grub boot up process it feels like I
had some sort of hardware failure (screen tear and fade out to black).
The machine will no longer boot up, no Asus splash screen, no getting
into BIOS nothing
Currently trying the pre-rolled kernel mentioned above. At this point I
have been running several hours without incident. I have found decent
rate of discharge and no shutdowns yet. I will give it a couple of
days more before I get too excited. I hope others can try this
patch/kernel and pos
Hi All,
We have uploaded a new kernel, 3.2.0-17.27. It contains the fix
mentioned in comment #9. We hope that it will resolve the issue you are
seeing here. If you could please test and let us know your results, it
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi All,
Upstream recently discovered an issue with the RC6 patch which was
applied, and has proposed the following additional patch:

gfx/2012-February/015319.html
I apologize for asking for even more testing, but could you give the

Just after posting the last comment. Hard shutdown with nothing obvious
in the kernel log.

Hi Andrew,
First, could you file a new separate bug using the command "ubuntu-bug
linux". Then could you mark that bug a duplicate of this one. I just
want to capture your specific hardware information and have it available
for future reference. Additionally, if you haven't already done so,

Same issue here, I noticed that power consumption decreased after
updating to 3.2.0-17-generic and wondered if RC6 had been enabled by
default. A hard shutdown this morning made me do some searching to find
out that it had in fact been enabled. I'm on an Asus UX31 and have seen
this behaviour since
Hi Dean,
Thanks for testing and providing your feedback. Please continue to
track the upstream bug report (ie fdo 44867) regarding this issue. I'm
also assigning myself to this bug in Launchpad for tracking purposes.
