here is the status file
it was indeed corrupt.
I fixed it using
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gconf2

There is a "libxr%nder1," dependency in the record for gnome-pilot. This
might be triggered by some hardware problem (memory, harddisk) or file
system corruption. I close the bug against update-manager now.
