Moving to lightdm for now as it's clearly not a kernel bug, I'm
suspecting something to do with console-kit/policykit/lightdm, I'll let
the desktop team triage to the right one :)

I'm using now edubuntu beta1 (2012-02-28) with 3.2.0-17-generic-pae
kernel and experience the same problem. I confirm that I cannot shutdown
from an administrative user using the GRAFIC interface, but the terminal
line command "sudo init 0" works properly. No problem with the built in
edubuntu user
I'm using a live persistent edubuntu version. If you need additional log
files, let me know.
