Thinking about this a bit more, IMHO it shouldn't be possible to update
the kernel without updating the restricted-modules, if you have them
installed.
Perhaps there should be two kernels, a -generic and a
-generic+restricted.

Ok, This was because I updated the kernel but not the restricted modules
(they weren't available at the time...)
After rebooting into the old kernel and re-updating, the new restricted
modules were installed and my wireless now works fine again...
