Your explanation would be correct if the WAP was in the list. Though it isn't.
It seems it only will be entered once a successful connection has been
established.

This is not a bug. NM will ask for the password again if you give it
enough time to timeout and try three times, because we have to assume
the password may be correct if it was entered by the user, something
else could be amiss.
As a workaround, you can always modify the password by clicking the
a
** Package changed: ubuntu => network-manager (Ubuntu)
