Same case here. I added the xpenguins gnome applet, and it worked fine.
But later when I logged off and tried to log back in, I got a blank
screen.

Found a way to get a working system back:
- go a terminal (control+alt+f1)
- deinstall xpenguins-applet
- launch back in
Now gnome-panel will ask if you want to remove the applet!
