Screen/windows only partiall
I have something similar when running byobu-tmux in Precise. Some of the
time the bottom statusbar shows as all grey. This is even before I'm
running irssi or even many apps at all.

I repeatedly had exactly this behaviour under 11.10; similarly difficult
to predictably reproduce.
I can't recall seeing it since upgrading to 12.04 in mid-december.
