What happens if you install sun-java5-plugin and cahnge default java
using sudo update-alterntives --config java and choose java5 does this
still lock up. If so can you follow the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs and try to get a backtrace?

Status bar de-activated itsel
At the time I was also running Eclipse on the Sun Java 6 platform. I've
since had issues with this causing a lock up on Edgy (using the Java 6
from back ports).
At first I assumed the issue was because of the development status of
Feisty. Since I've had the same issue on Edgy the best explanation
