The ppdev kernel module is not loaded. This problem is fixed in Feisty. Here the ppdev module is loaded during the startup of CUPS. Load the ppdev module with sudo modprobe ppdev and both CUPS and HPLIP should detect you parallel printer correctly. Add a line only containing "ppdev" to your /e
