It also happens with me, across different distros (Lubuntu 13.10, Xubuntu 12.04
and Elementary Luna).
They all have nVidia boards with compositing enabled. My workaround was
selecting Gnome Do preferences through the Gnome Do itself rather than clicking
on the menu.
I don't think that disabling
I found to get back into the preferences, you just disable compositing
with your WM, make your changes, then turn compositing back on.
