I've now found, if you wait a bit the scanner will kick into action. At

You may have the same issue as me - It appears to be either that
warmup-time (can be changed in standard-options screen in Xsane) is
incorrectly set to automatic, or automatic warmup time is broken in the
current version.

Try to remove the ppdev module in feisty: 'sudo rmmod ppdev'. It worked for me
with an Epson Perfection 1260 (using the plustek backend).
The problem is also affecting the hp3900 backend, with an HP 4070 scanner, see

Wen I'am trying to scan with my Epson Perfection 1260/Photo, the Dia-
