Hi, xresprobe is no longer used in Hardy Heron, the development version
which will become Ubuntu 8.04. Because of that I'm closing this bug.
Please test Hardy (alpha3 or later), and if your hardware still fails to
get a correct resolution (or if it drops to failsafe mode), file a bug

This problem is still present on Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I recently
reformatted my laptop, and still had to manually edit xorg.conf in the
recovery console after a text install from the DVD. This time selecting
nv as the driver or nvidia didn't work, and I had to use vesa, and then

Hi
I've experienced the same problem. I had to change to device number from
"4:0:0" to "5:0:0" and vice versa to make it work.
I have a GeForce 7600GT running in SLI configuration. I am running Ubuntu 7.10.

This is still a problem in Kubuntu Gutsy 7.10, and is resolved in the
same way (by installing with the alternate installer and then editing
the xorg.conf file before running startkde). It would be fantastic if
you could sort it!

Have you tried 7.10 or later if the autodetection works better?

If you select the right card in the xorg.conf file, load the nvidia-glx
drivers and restricted kernel modules, then it works fine (or at least
as fine as the nvidia driver allows). But new users are never gonna
figure that out - they at least need to have a desktop with the correct
nv driver and so

So, key problem is not being able to detect the type of card, resolution
of screen, or select the right card with the vesa driver that is
actually plugged into the screen. It selects the one connected via SLI
by default.
When it tries to boot the OS (either from an install or the Live CD) it

Hi Christian,
Which files do you need for this problem?
I enclose my current working xorg.conf (it is the one generated by the
nvidia-xconfig program and uses the graphics card at 4:0:0 not the one
at 3:0:0, which is the one that xserver wants to use by default.
I seem to have all of the xorg.co
