Thanks, after hours of trying different things I gave up. On a whim I set
up new account...and everything was like new (after deleting my original
account). I will definatly save this email for future referenceI will
need it for sure as I was a windows guy until three weeks ago.

It seems that you just lost some packages. Can you please run in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop unity gnome-session yelp
...and see if this solved your problem?
