Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

@inigo: I just downloaded notify-osd 0.9.34-0ubuntu5 from quantal
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/notify-osd) and I installed it in
Precise using dpkg.
The black border is gone ;)

classic gnome desktop(no effect) (gnome-panel installed). and it is
super ugly :)

this is a regression bug.. notify-osd always worked good without composite.
now that also launcher and dash are trasparent without compositor in unity-2d,
it would be nice to have a clean notify-osd as well :)
