I solved the problem by taking a driver from another acer device (found the
solution by googling on the mic problem)
Currently I will not upgrade my acer one to another Ubuntu version as I
don't like the user interface and how it sometimes hangs. Additionally I

I checked the sound preferences from the top menu bar (loudspeaker icon)
selected the input tab
selected the internal audio
the input level bar was moving erratically
moving the slider for input volume level made only marginal effect on the
movement of the bar
when using the sound recorder app
