The same happens to me - everything fine until I plug an external HD into the laptop - and then the following start to eat CPU cycles: gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor gdu-notification-daemon If I stop these (it was an act of desperation) then update-notifier starts to eat CPU cycles I am using 11.10 On
