I would just like to confirm that changing "PCI:0:5:0" in xorg.conf to
"PCI:1:0:0" solved this problem.

Duncan: thanks for the information. I wonder why the card is listed as
"PCI:0:5:0" in this config, and "PCI:1:0:0" in the one from bug #87496.
Changing it to the latter should make it work.

I've attached the output of 'sudo lspci -vvnn' (what's that '-vvnn'
bit?) but I'm pasting here the bit I guess you're interested in, it's
marked clearly with a row of '#' in the file.

could you attach the output of 'lspci -vvnn'?

if you use "nvidia", you must comment dri in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Same problem here with a GeForce 7900 GS.
The problem might be linked to the fact I also have an internal nvidia
graphic card (6150) and only occurs with nvidia binary drivers. Use
lspci to detect the bus your gcard is connected to then manually change
it in xorg.cong works also.
sudo dpkg-reconf
I can work around this with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
and setting the driver to nvidia - not using the suggested simpler
method. Reconfiguring has however set my keyboard to the wrong keymap,
EN I think.
