I also have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a BCM4312 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4312]
(so says lspci) card. For me it is working very fine in Intrepid with
the 2.6.27 kernel.
The only problem is that the b43-fwcutter needed for installation is not
shipped with the CD images, but that's another issue...

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
> "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed
This is shown, because the firmware of the broadcom card is proprietary
and therefore not shipped with Ubuntu. You have to install it over the
restricted hardware manager.
