The -dbg and -dbgsym have the same function, -dbg were built only for
some packages not -dbgsym are built for everything. If a package has a
-dbg you can either install it or the -dbgsym it makes no difference,

installed debug pkg for libxine but dbgsym pkg version is incompatible
with installed version of libxine. I ran apport-retrace after
installing the debug pkg. hope this helps?

totem-xine crashed
can't find debug pkgs for xine-lib and debug pkg for totem-xine in
ubuntu is incompatible with currently installed totem-xine pkg. can you
direct me to a debug pkg for version 2.16.2-0ubuntu3? this is what I
could get for the video.

Thank you for your bug. Your backtrace points to a xine-lib problem,
reassigning. Do you have the URI of the video you were trying to play?
You can get a debug backtrace by using apport-retrace on the crash file
after installing the debug packages if you want
