You can close this bug. (Am I really that stupid, was the USB not
connected well enough? It sure looks like that was the problem... Sorry

$ dmesg

Maybe 'sudo lsusb -v' is more interesting? It gives a different output.
And yes, I plugged it in before running lsusb. The scanner gets its
power from the USB port, there is no seperate power cable.

Please attach lsusb.txt after running this command:
sudo lsusb -v > lsusb.txt
