Okay, closing again. I still don’t think that’s the proper fix, though;
even if update-grub can DTRT, it’s confusing to _humans_ that
vmlinuz-2.6.20-9-generic is a normal kernel and vmlinuz-2.6.19-4-generic
is a xen kernel (and this will cause “real” problems when the xen kernel
is upgraded to 2.6
This "half" of the bug is a duplicate of bug #87802 which has (IMHO) a
proper fix attached.

This is only half fixed. It is true that I get one correct entry now:

I’m sorry, this doesn’t make sense to me. The fact that I can apt-get
install xen-image-2.6.19-3-generic-amd64, run update-grub, reboot, and
get a kernel panic due to a missing initrd is definitely a bug. I don’t
mean to be rude, but I’m going to reopen this.
(BTW, shouldn’t xen-image run update
So, I don’t want to start a war reopening bugs, but someone please tell
me why this was Rejected?

The update-grub script uses `grep -v "xen"` to try to filter out the
names of xen kernels. But how is it supposed to know that
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19-3-generic is a xen kernel and
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-8-generic is a real kernel? (And what happens when
the version numbers start to collide?) Some mo
