This is a bug in usplash/plymouth's use of Intel's KMS (whichever the one that
12.10 uses).
Many other distros use this and this is becoming critical (people not being
able to access their screens).

Add echo 2 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness to /etc/rc.local help
for the moment.

Brightness
I have the same problem. This did not use to be the case when i was
using Ubuntu 11.04. But since 11.10, its been like this. Also, the
brightness control buttons do not work.
I use HP G72 B66US Laptop.

Similar problem on HP probook 6465b running Ubuntu 12.04. Screen
brightness and brightess setting resets to max afeter every reboot.
Also, even thought I've set the screen to be turned off after 3 min
idling, it's not. It only fades to black, but you can still see that the
backlight is working.

I've temporaly edited /etc/rc.local
with
echo 2 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
2 is the brightness set by default (choose between 0 - 10)

Brightness re
This describes precisely what happens to my laptop screen. Although it
does not happen with my external display (over HDMI).
I have a System76 Pangolin Performance (panp7). Running the open
"radeon" driver with a ATI HD4570 (iirc).
