As a hint, compiling the current tarball from mplayerhq, you get a package with exactly the same problem. (method: sudo apt-get build-dep mplayer; fakeroot debian/binary) So most likely the devil is in the libaries (maybe libmad). -- new mplayer gives garbage audio output https://launchpad.net/b

Same problem here, I'm running 1.0~rc1-0ubuntu3 with Feisty up-to-date. I get an error when I'm trying to watch a video: Trying to force audio codec driver family libmad... Requested audio codec family [mad] (afm=libmad) not available. Enable it at compilation. I just get noise out of the
