It seems unlikely that octave will be officially backported to 12.04
because of the number of packages in the archive that strictly depend on
octave3.2.
There is an Octave team PPA with Octave 3.6.3 available for 12.04 and
older Ubuntu releases.

The Debian packages have been updated to 3.6.1 for a while now, and
Debian had 3.4. before. How come Ubuntu does not have at least 3.4?
