I can confirm this bug too.
In my case, setting tookbar to hide becomes in a white window.
As a workaround do this:
- Open gconf-editor
- Go to /apps/gthumb/ui
- Set the key "toolbar_visible"
Now it should work.

Yes, that must be the problem. I guess I had gthumb running without
toolbar before the said upgrade happened. I recently recursively unset
the gthumb gconf keys and the window contents came back. I couldn’t
track which setting it was, but /apps/gthumb/ui/toolbar_visible really
is the culprit.

Slightly different bug here (Dell Inspiron 510m, intel 915 graphics):
gthumb starts ok. Whenever I use 'View', 'Show/Hide', 'Toolbar', the
window will completely disappear and become empty. So I started up
gconf-editor (from a command-line, as normal user). Going to 'Apps',
'gthumb', 'ui', I toggl
I can confirm this bug.
I have tried to reinstall gthumb, also to remove ~/.gnome2/gthumb, but that
doesn't work.
As said, in fullscreen mode the GUI works fine.
