Hi Michael, update-manager works perfectly for me.
I don't remember seeing the crash during my last reboot though.
During my last update a python app crashed but I dismissed the crash
report (there were many python updates), any idea if I can recover it?

Got the same error with feisty herd 3 after install.
I just updated all suggested packages and rebooted and I get the same error.

This sounds like a transient error with your mirror not being up-to-
date. The software-properties-gtk package is available now and there is
a new gnome-app-install 0.3.18 package available.
Could you please check if those updates fix the issue for you?
