The evtest command does not do anything from within X or from a VT.
When called without redirecting the output it lists a number of event
codes before bringing up the testing ... (interrupt to exit) message,
trying various operations of the buttons and scrolling of the touchpad
does not gen

Is your Touchpad completely dead?
Anyway, this bug should be documented so we can investigate the problem, to do
so, please the following command from your Terminal(You can start Terminal by
Ctrl+Alt+T): 'apport-collect 831960'(Without quotes :D)

Touchpad
Using the xev app does not give any events happening when the touchpad
is clicked, tapped or scrolled.
The touchpad option is visible in System->Administration->Mouse.
