Might be a hardware problem, now when windows mounts it it says it can only
mount it at a lower speed, and some googling turns up quite a few t41/t42
thinkpads with messed up USB ports (out of warranty now). So it very well
could be a hardware problem (gradually degraded possibly).

Bought a new flash drive, plugged it in, and now it just keeps flashing
and never mounts or anything.

Well, I guess it must have been a sign of hardware starting to fail, now
it does not open up anymore on any system. Please close this bug, sorry
to bother. (having backups is a wonderful thing...)

dmesg shows
