The first attachment display_non_U was actually another copy of xorg.0.log.
Perhaps you could re-attach the output of:
sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a
from the non-working machine.
But according to the xorg files, we have some interesting kernels in
use:
2.6.24-29-xen : no unity
2.6.
Hi, the first 3 attachments are from the ´non-unity´ system and the
last 3 are from the ´unity´ system. Hope that makes sense.

Does either have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? I think mostly this is no
longer used these days, but it is possible that your original system
still has one which is messing things up.

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. Running 'lspci' gives me , among other
things, 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R520
[Radeon X1800]; but when I run 'lsmod | grep video' all I get is the
prompt. This is the same on both my versions of Natty.

This doesn't sound much like a Firefox bug, I have changed to Unity
which I suspect is closer to the mark.
As to why it might work on one release and not another, I suspect it is
down to the graphics driver that you had running in each. In the fresh
install perhaps you ticked the option for insta
