This problem does not occur with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric.
The problem with earlier versions may be because eSpeak is looking for
the mbrola voice files in the wrong location. Try moving or copying the
voice file /usr/share/mbrola/us1/us1 to /usr/share/mbrola/voices/us1
Alternatively, use eSpeak ve
