You do not have any swap enabled. I'd try this (where foo is your swap
device)
sudo mkswap /dev/foo
sudo swapon -a

For what it's worth, this is not an Ubuntu-specific issue. I just tried
-20-rc7 vanilla and it fails as well. Here's a probably more helpful
kern.log . I'll try to take the issue upstream ...

Recently the "suspend" and "hibernate" options have disappeared from
gnome's logout dialog (a good thing). I tried hibernating with 20-6.11
by stopping X (/etc/init.d/gdm stop), unloading the nvidia driver (sudo
rmmod nvidia) and echo "disk" > /sys/power/state . It still fails.

Ok I wait for the new kernel 2.6.20-6.8 or I wait for Herd 3 tomorrow.

Johan, these are very likely to be different bugs (i.e. two machines may
fail to hibernate for different reasons). To make things easier to

I see the same on my ThinkPad T42 that Vassilis has.
GDM comes back again after a few seconds and failed to hibernate.
