I downloaded Precise beta2, and was unable to get the sd card to work on
it. I only tried it on a live usb of it though, so I'm not sure if that
would make a difference or not. However, on my Arch install the sd
reader works with the same "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" added
(kernel 3.2.13-1-ARC

better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?

None of the previous solutions has helped me on DELL Vostro 1710. A downgrade
to kernel: '2 .6.38-12 x86_64' solves the problem temporarily.

Did you try adding the modprobe conf file? For me in Oneiric the
modprobe -r firewire_ohci isn't needed, just the modprobe
sudo su
echo "sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" > /etc/modprobe.d/sd_reader.conf"
rmmod sdhci_pci sdhci
modprobe sdhci
modprobe sdhci_pci
update-initramfs -u
exit

So, same problem for me on Oneiric using a Dell Vostro 1510.
The built in reader is not recognised anymore after oneiric upgrade. Was
working fine on Natty
"sudo modprobe -r firewire_ohci" doesnt fix it for me.
Other workarounds?

I upgraded to Oneiric Ocelot a few days ago. After that the SD-card auto-mount
without the "sudo modprobe -r firewire_ohci" command, but I still have "options
sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" in one of my blacklistfiles in /etc/modprobe.d.

I have this issue with my Lenovo ThinkPad X220 as well. Googling seems
to indicate this is a known issue, but there doesn't seem to be a patch
that addresses it.

The nasty workaround for met is to boot into my old maverick kernel
whenever I need to use the SD card reader :(
