I'm seeing this after upgrading to 9.10 (was not present in 9.4) . I
have an nvidia card (9400 GT). Direct rendering is on and the nvidia
drivers appear to be functioning.

I don't know when the fix has been commited, but in Gutsy, the same
thing happens ... I had to use Cesare's tip to make it work ...
Maybe the bug is in the ATI driver ...
