Since version 2.12.3-1 Makefile.am's are no longer shipped. Since
2.14.0 the examples are in gtkmm-documentation (pending sponsor in
Debian experimental), whose README.Debian contains hints to build the
examples.

files. They aren't meant to be useful in isolation.
