I use the defaults for edgy. this is a 1280x800 screen, but I am using a second screen with xinerama. I don't recall this ever happening when working on a single screen. no transparent panel, no background image, and not sure about the masking, but I definitely didn't change any of the defaults tha

edgy. it happens with the gaim, skype and gnome-power-manager icons. these all happen to be at the right of the right-most separator in the upper notification area. the volume-applet and the network monitor, which are besides these, don't have this problem otherwise. On 1/10/07, Sebastien Bacher
