Hi, I have this problem on a 11.10. (Acer Aspire One)
I don't have the problem on the old Ubuntu release.

sorry I forgot that ubuntu uses dhclient instead of dhcpcd. You need to
do sudo dhclient wlan0 instead of sudo dhcpcd wlan0. Or you can install
dhcpcd with - sudo apt-get install dhcpcd.

I am getting same issue with AR9285 Wireless controler. Since unity cant use
wicd as network manager I using command line tools to stay connected to wifi.
You need to stop network-manager service:
sudo service network-manager stop
Then you need to create simple wpasupplicant config file with this
** Package changed: gnome-nettool (Ubuntu) => network-manager (Ubuntu)
** Tags removed: needs-reassignment

I'm not sure why it's marked as a bug in gnome-nettool, I thought it was
in network-manager or something like that. The bug report was created
from https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
nettool/+question/158515 where someone had put that package information.
