Fwiw, this appears to be fixed in 3.0. I compiled my own kernel with the
ubuntu .config from 2.6.38 & the 3.0 kernel sources (appropriately
updated) and suspend & resume started working again.

Addendum. I can confirm that suspend/resume works fine in the Ubuntu
kernel tagged Ubuntu-2.6.37-12.26 but fails in Ubuntu-2.6.38-1.27
I'd be happy to git bisect those two tags, but if I try, the sources
git-bisect asks me to build don't have any of the ubuntu build
infrastucture (no debian/rules
