Actually I do not need to set
"GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768"
any longer.
It is enough to use the line
"GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768"
However, Plymouth theme still does not load properly and I have uninstalled all
Plymouth theming.
But this is obviously not a bug in grub.

However, even the latest grub (1.99-8ubuntu1) and with the latest
nvidia-current (275.09.07-0ubuntu1) the gfxpayload does not work.
I have to add the line
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768
in /etc/default/grub.
Even doing this, the Plymouth does not usually
The newest update of “grub2” 1.99-4ubuntu1 does not help.
