I suspect the issue lies with PulseAudio being started from the user session upon login, and a daemonized mpd missing some crucial bit of information (pulse cookie from environment?) somewhere. Note that you're not actually using ALSA, but the ALSA emulation provided by pulseaudio... ** Changed in
