i recreated .vimrc and it worked. Odd, because root had an identical file and
it worked just fine.

Check the variable "runtimepath" in your (user) .vimrc and see if all
the paths are correct (you can delete your .vimrc and make a new one
with ":mkvimrc" for test purposes, this new .vimrc worked for me).
