As I wrote above it is a matter of both kernel and the opensource AMD
driver. Using the fglrx reduces dramatically the power consumption! From
my oneiric (linux-kernel-3.0) tests I can see that the power consumption

Over a month after the official release, and since the problem keeps up, I
decided before my pc burns completely, to switch back to maverick, at least
untill oneiric. Before doing so, I gave a try to third party repositories

I cannot find any process called "beam.smp". Besides If it was only that
process, I suppose I would have only high cpu usage and temperature. But
my whole pc burns! Cpu, Ram, hard disk, gpu, all of the seem to have

A process called "beam.smp" is using constantly a little bit cpu and could
prevent it going to sleep and thus power saving state.
