I also came across this problem with Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) and found a solution
here:

I followed the advice there and installed kernel 2.6.39-020639
After upgrading to 11.04 began having this problem. After a segfault,
any further attempted operations on the mounted volume hang. Reboot is
required to remove the stuck process.
